*Before you watch the youtube video - know that Jason Russell is considered a social entrepreneur. He created an organization/movement to raise awareness about the use children soldiers in the Lord's Resistance Army (Uganda), under Joseph Kony.

2)Respond:
1.Why
did Jason Russell make the video? What impact has it had?
2.What
are the potential pros and cons of “distilling a very complicated 26-year war
into something that’s consumable and understandable” (entrepreneurship)?
3.Do
you think the KONY 2012 movement is the best way to address this geo-political
issue? Why or why not?
1) I think that Jason Russell made this video in order to expand the organization against Joseph Kony and the Lord’s Resistance Army. As a social entrepreneur he wanted to make more people aware of what he was doing and the organization he was building in order to fight against the children soldiers and the abduction of children by Kony in Uganda and other states and places in Africa. He wanted to make more people participate in this fight against Kony in order to save other African children and avoid them to suffer the same thing as other children like Jacob, which saw his brother being killed by the rebels, which cut his throat with a machete.
ReplyDelete2) I think that the pros and cons of “distilling a very complicated 26-year war into something that’s consumable and understandable” are many. The pros of doing such a thing are that you can expand the amount of people that know about this. You can simplify the war into a concept that you can tell everyone in half an hour and make him or her participate to your cause. Instead the cons are that the people won’t really understand entirely and completely what is happening. They won’t understand all the conflict its causes and how it developed, but still you can make them aware of what is happening. This also because many people didn’t know or just ignored what was happening.
3) The Kony 2012 movement is probably the best way of addressing this geo-political issue because maybe the United States and other states would not have understood that there was this kind of problem if many people would have sent email and mails and phoned to the senators. The government has to take provisions if there are many people, which want something. Maybe at the beginning they didn’t even think that there was this kind of problem in Africa because they weren’t aware, but because of all the voices that Jason Russell gathered in order to make them understand that it was an important job they understood. In fact Kony was placed in the first place in the ICC lists of the international criminals because he committed war crimes against civilian population, such as sexual slavery, murder, rapes and abductions. In this way in fact the United States sent a small number od U. S. forces in central Africa to provide assistance to regional forces that are working towards the removal of Joseph Kony from the battlefield. In fact they succeeded in their mission.
1) I think that Jason Russell made this video in order to expand his organization against Kony and the Lord’s Resistance Army. He increase the awareness of the organization he was building in order to fight against the abduction and slaughter of children by Kony in Africa. He wanted to include more people, therefore making them aware of what was happening, with him in his fight against Kony so that he could save other African children and avoid them to suffer the same thing as other children which went through this experience like his friend that he encountered there in Africa that saw his brother being killed by the rebels.
ReplyDelete2) I consider that the pros and cons of distilling a very complicated 26-year war into something that’s consumable and understandable may be various. The cons are that the people won’t really understand totally the events that are occurring there in African. They won’t understand all the terror that Kony has brought through the African continent, but nevertheless you can make them aware that this is happening. This also because many people didn’t know what was happening. Instead the pros of doing such a thing are that you can enlarge the amount of people that know about this. You can simplify the war into a discussion that you can tell everyone and present them in a short amount of time and make him or her participate to your cause.
3) The Kony 2012 movement is probably the best way of addressing this geo-political issue because many states wouldn’t have understood that there was this kind of problem if many people would have sent mails and phoned to the senators and politicians telling them about the things that were happening. Federico and Leo - I hope you guys enjoyed watching the video (I know it is long, but I think worthwhile). A few thoughts:
ReplyDelete- I really liked your comment, Federico "They won’t understand all the conflict its causes and how it developed, but still you can make them aware of what is happening. This also because many people didn’t know or just ignored what was happening." - this is a major problem with social movements, people join because they think it is for the right reasons, but do not have the full "picture" of the situation.
- Leo: I completely agree, this video does a great job raising awareness!
Thank you, very much, Mr. Fry
Delete1)Jason Russell is trying to aware the people about Kony and his injustices towards chidren, that are made soldiers and abducted. He is trying to get as many people as possible together to fight over him and catch him.
ReplyDelete2)The pros about this is that many people getting aware about this and are starting to participate. People can aware family and friends. The cons is that some people might be aware but will not pay much attention because they don't know the terror that is going on. However, as more people are aware the more will be done to stop Kony.
3)I think that this is the best way because many people watch the TV, YOU TUBE, and other medias. People are able to see the people and their voices. Video like this has a greater impact on people that just email or something else that is written.
1) The purpose of this video is to raise awareness about Kony and all the injustice and crimes he has committed, especially towards children, that are abducted and forced to become soldiers. It certainly has had a strong impact especially in my opinion, on the emotional side.
ReplyDelete2)I think that the pros and cons of “distilling a very...consumable and understandable” are numerous.
The pros are:
-you can raise awareness
-you can simplify the war into a concept in half an hour
The cons are:
- the people won’t really understand exactly what is happening
- they won’t understand the conflict throughly
3) The Kony 2012 movement is considerably the most efficient way of addressing this geo-political issue because many states wouldn’t have understood that there was this kind of problem. I personally think that the idea of spreading this issue through youtube was incredibly smart. We live in a world dominated by an audio/visual/digital media; if someone posts a video on youtube it spreads around the world in around '0.001s. perhaps in the beginning there was o awareness because nobody had ever addressed this issue, however with this video the whole world knew about KONY 2012.
1. Jaso Russell made this video to expand his organization, make his life achievement more aware, and to get one step closer to a finishing line which has never been crossed before. Jason Russell in just 30 minutes has reached great achievements such as having more than 10 million views in just 6 days. Jason's goal was for the video to truly give chills to a viewer, his goal was to make this small, unknown topic in Uganda a huge problem world wide. He mad ethis video to expand his organization and to make the LRA group more aware. He wants to make them famous, but not in the good way, famous in the way that more people will be aware of his violence and illegal acts on children. It had a great impact on society as it turned a small problem in Uganda into one of the most talked videos on Youtube. It also has had an impact as it shows that if one truly has a goal in life, one must try to achieve it. Jason Russell with this 30 minute video wants to prove that if you really care about something and have a goal, you must fight and work to achieve it.
ReplyDelete2. I believe that there are various pros and cons of “distilling a very complicated 26-year war into something that’s consumable and understandable”. The pros are that many people are aware of this problem and that Jason Russell has changed the 1% of people knowing about Kony to almost the entire planet. With a simple 30 minute video, Jason spoke clearly, used many images and made his point clear, as well as his goal. Instead the cons are that the people might not understand how pivotal the situation really is. I believe that the only way to fully understand and feel the importance pf the problem is to actually go to Uganda and do something similar to what Jason did in 2003, which is to talk to the poor and innocent children such as Jacob and learn from them what is going on. There is no better way to actually know and understand the situation. The video is really good, however it doesn't give the viewer a full picture of the sitation. Meaning some people might not understand the actual conflict other than a person named Kony abducting children and turning them into soldiers.
3. Kony 2012 is the best way to address this geo-political issue simply do to the fact that it was made through a simple, short video and published on youtube which is a shoot and score in the worl dof today as if a video is good, short, and understandable, people will watch. And if there are many viewers than more people will be aware of the situation and so on. That is why I believe that KONY 2012 was the best way to address this geo-political issue.
1) Jason Russell created this video because he found out about Kony and his actions and wanted the world to know. Russell knew that the only way to capture is to help aid the Ugandan police. Creating this video had spread international support on the hunt to capture Kony. As of now (2/7/13) the YouTube video has been viewed over 96 million times, and countless donations have been posted towards the invisible children company. Also as a result of the publicity gained by this video the United States has sent over advisers to help aid the Ugandan police, and also a live time report system has been implemented throughout the areas near LRA activity to warn people nearby.
ReplyDelete2) The video had included many strong points and gave a clear and simple plan on what anyone can do to help. By simplifying the LRA conflict in such a consumable way the video Kony 2012 is easy to grasp and more appealing to the general audience. There are however a couple of problems with simplifying the video, a major one being oversimplification. The video focuses mainly on Kony and not the LRA in general; doing this lessened the magnitude of the problem because people would think of it as the work of one person not a large group. Also the video mainly describes the Kony problem within Uganda, however the LRA is 25 years old and is spread throughout 4 countries, again oversimplification downplays the magnitude of the LRA.
3) Although not the best way to address the Kony issue, the video is probably the most practical considering it is a video by the public. Jason Russell and the creators of this video had to create the best way to spread knowledge on the issue through means available to the public. This video is catchy, informative, and managed to gain million of views, making it a very useful tool for spreading awareness on the problem. And by using the Internet to spread information guaranteed the possibility of global coverage, whereas a novel or magazine article would not be as famous/available.
1. The purpose of this video was to enlarge and expand his organization. The author wanted to raise awareness about Joseph Kony and all of the injustice in Africa. This video surley had a big impact on the many millions of people who saw it.
ReplyDelete2 I consider that the pros and cons of distilling a very complicated 26-year war into something that’s consumable and understandable are many. The pros are that a distilled and consumable video would make the issue more accessible and understandable, and it would make the video spread faster. The cons are that the video could lack of detail and people would not really understand the reality behind Joseph Kony and the war in Africa.
The Kony 2012 probably is not the best way of addressing this geo-political issue, even though the video is a very valid way. Since the internet has billions of users, spreading a video on internet and I social networks may result as a very effective idea.
1.Why did Jason Russell make the video? What impact has it had?
ReplyDelete1. Jason Russell created this video because he wanted to spread the word about Kony's terrifying actions in the crimes he has committed over these decades. That is why Russell decided to help the Ugandan police to try to reduce the amount of kidnapped victims and capture Kony as fast as possible. This had a huge impact to everyone, because up until now, only a few percentile knew what was really happening, and who Kony was. Thus now, with almost 100 million views, many people, from all around the world, started commercializing and making famous known, giving donations to stop Kony as soon as possible.
2.What are the potential pros and cons of “distilling a very complicated 26-year war into something that’s consumable and understandable” (entrepreneurship)?
2.) The pros would be that people in this case understood, with the simplicity and through various clips combined, the object, and the goal of what Jason Russell is trying to accomplish. However, the people, the rest of the world, have a huge possibility of not realizing what the outcome really is; in the sense of, how problematic this problem really is. In addition viewing through a 30 minute video does express and show sympathy and emotions towards the people in Africa, however does not actually know how it feels like, thus i believe it is necessary for the people to actually go to Uganda, or similar places, where LRA are, and actually interview, or view how the African people live on a daily basis full of fear and despair.
3.Do you think the KONY 2012 movement is the best way to address this geo-political issue? Why or why not?
Kony 2012 movement in my opinion is the best way to address the geo-political issue. With the new advanced technology, and the vast amount of people using the internet, and by its incredible speed, I think it is the best way since anyone can view this simple video, also it will spread faster all around the globe.
I see two major trends in comments:
ReplyDelete1) The video does a good job, in a short period, to outline the problem. At the same time, however, it doesn't show the depth needed to fully comprehend and start to address the issue.
2) Most comments reference the video as a good way to address the geo-political issue because of the "interconnectedness" and availability of the video for a wide audience.
More about this today in class! Thanks for those who watched/responded!
